The Most Reverend Raymond Leo Burke was ordained to the episcopacy by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 1995, at the Basilica of St. Peter, and was installed in the Diocese of La Crosse on February 22, 1995, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. On December 2, 2003, Bishop Burke was named Archbishop of St. Louis. In 2003, he was also appointed to the Holy See’s Congregation for the Clergy. Archbishop Burke is the National Director of the Marian Catechist Apostolate, as well as the Spiritual Director of the Real Presence Association. On July 8, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Burke to the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, where he had previously served as Defender of the Bond from 1989 to 1994. On November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Burke to the cardinalate.
