Forming those who form others

About Us

Mission Statement

Compelled by the love of Christ, who calls us to make disciples of all nations, the Office of Catechetics at Franciscan University unites with the Shepherds of the Church to advance the catechetical mission through academic and spiritual formation, professional development, and field training for laity, religious, and clergy.

History

Catechetical Review is the most recent development in the 20-year history of the Office of Catechetics at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. Founded as an undergraduate program, with it first incoming class in the fall of 1995, the Office of Catechetics added a Theology Master of Arts Specialization in Catechetics, and in the fall of 2014 introduced a full Master of Arts Online Degree Program in Catechetics & Evangelization. Now the Catechetical Review is integral to the work of the Catechetical Institute at Franciscan University.

The Office of Catechetics reaches far beyond the boundaries of the Ohio campus, as faculty collaborate with many dioceses and parishes in catechetical formation programs. Hundreds of catechists and catechetical leaders come from as far away as Australia and China to the St. John Bosco Conference every July, to either follow their own specific faith formation track or to be enriched by open tracks. Online modules for catechist formation are currently available and under development.

In 2005, the Office of Catechetics agreed to co-publish The Sower catechetical journal with its owner, Maryvale Institute of Birmingham, England, until the end of 2014 when Maryvale could no longer financially support the publication. Recognizing the demand for such a publication for catechetical leaders to use in faith formation and for the development of catechists, Franciscan University President, Fr. Sean O. Sheridan, TOR, approved the launch of this brand new journal. Also, Maryvale Institute granted permission to Franciscan University to continue providing The Sower back issues to subscribers of Catechetical Review.
